Vladimir Putin’s homophobic regime has provoked violent acts against the LGBT community throughout Russia and its neighboring regions, specifically in its capital, Moscow.  The absence of punishment for those who commit such hate crimes inevitably transform the public spaces of Moscow into one that is not welcoming to express one’s true self and sexual identity/orientation.  This project seeks to create safe haven spaces for the LGBT community, and anyone who would want to express themselves without the worry of being attacked - taking inspiration from the bathhouses of 1400’s Florence, 1870’s Paris, early 1900’s New York, and 1970’s San Francisco.

Situated on the southeast portion of the MKAD, along the Moscow River, Termal’nyye Vanny creates a stepping condition based upon its natural topography, which celebrates water’s natural properties.  Its phases and physical properties were utilized in determining the programmatic elements that occur along the river.  The project also incorporates a series of swales and rain gardens which could help cleanse the urban run-off as it percolates down back into the river.
